How to maintain your electric bicycle battery?

The battery is the heart and engine of your electrically-assisted bicycle. Proper maintenance will ensure that it lasts as long as possible. Here are a few tips for looking after your electric bike battery.

Four steps to good battery care

  • For the first 5 uses of your battery, charge and discharge it as much as possible.
  • Remember to recharge your battery regularly, even if you're not using it (at least once a month). Charging your electric bike battery regularly prevents deep discharge. This means that if one or more cells are not recharged for too long, they will no longer function and may cause you to lose range or even prevent your battery from functioning.
  • Store your battery in a cool, dry place that is not subject to wide variations in temperature.
  • When charging your battery, first plug your charger into your wall socket before connecting it to your battery. Why should you do this? When you connect your charger to your wall socket, an electric arc can form. While chargers are designed to absorb this arc without damaging the charger, batteries are not.

Pay attention to the charge level when storing

The second important factor is the charge level of your battery during storage. During a long period of storage without use, the ideal charge level for your battery is 40% in order to limit the self-discharge phenomenon. For example, a battery stored at a charge level of 100% may self-discharge 20% more, depending on the temperature, than a battery stored at a charge level of 40%.
