Define the price and type of used electric bike you want
Before you set out to explore the second-hand e-bike market, it's best to define the framework of your desires. Although the search for the perfect model can be tricky, it's still advisable to take the time to define the type of bike you want and estimate your budget.
Your to-do list:
- Choose between an electric city bike, a mountain bike, a VTC or a speed bike.
- Define an approximate price range.
- Determine the condition of the second-hand electric bike you want: like new, very good condition, good condition or fair condition.
- Refine any preferences you may have: wheel size, luggage rack, battery life, etc.
Specifying these different elements will help you to target your search more effectively and save you precious time when it comes to getting into the saddle!
Things to check when buying a second-hand E-Bike
Even if you decide to opt for a second-hand electric bike, it's unthinkable to go in blindly with a beautiful bike that ends up being in poor condition! Whether it's the equipment or the general appearance of the bike, make sure you check its condition carefully to ensure that you get the most out of it.
So how do you choose a second-hand electric bike?
Battery, motor, frame: at Doctibike, we're aware that understanding the technical components of an electric bike can be tricky.
In the rest of this article, we'll explain how to check the 4 essential components of a second-hand electric bike so you can buy with confidence!
Find the perfect second-hand bike...
1. The frame of a used electric bike
The frame is the structure that connects the main parts of the bike.
When inspecting the frame, pay particular attention to the presence of any cracks. A scratched frame may be acceptable, but a cracked frame means that the used electric bike is irreparably damaged. To properly assess the condition of the frame, make sure the bike is clean to detect any defects. To remove any doubts, take a cloth with a bit of stain remover with you when you inspect the bike.
Remember: a clean bike is often the sign of a well-maintained bike!
Areas to check for cracks:
- Under the crankset
- At the seatstays (the two tubes behind the seat tube)
- At the down tube
- At the motor and battery location
Also check that no paint has been added to hide any defects.
2. The components
It's important to check the chain, cassette, brakes and cranks. Although a technical component can be replaced, unlike the frame, it will cost you extra when you buy your second-hand electric bike.
For the chain, you can use a chain tester, a small metal tool that makes it easy to determine whether or not the chain on your used electric bike needs replacing.
For the cassette, look at the teeth: if they are protruding, it's a good sign, but if they are rounded, it will need replacing.
As for the brakes, check that their thickness is visible to the naked eye. Don't hesitate to use your smartphone and its lighting to take a close look.
3. Bicycle battery capacity
The battery, a key element in your electric bike experience, can have a major impact on its quality. When you consider buying a second-hand EAB from a private individual, it is not possible to be certain that the battery is 100% functional or to know exactly how many charges it has undergone. That said, you can ask the seller for information such as the number of kilometres travelled and whether the battery has already been replaced, with proof of purchase.
Did you know? The battery represents on average 30% to 40% of the total value of the bike.
That's why it's essential to make sure the battery is in good condition when you buy a second-hand electric bike. By using our services, you can benefit from a full battery check-up, giving you peace of mind about the condition of your battery.
Battery diagnostics for your second-hand bike purchase and reconditioning of a battery showing signs of wear: we're with you!

If any signs of weakness or wear are detected in your battery, we'll take care of reconditioning it to like-new condition. So you can set off again for hundreds of kilometres of cycling ;)
4. Engine and pedal assistance
Make sure that the motor on your used electric bike is from a recognised brand, so that you can get it repaired easily if necessary, such as Bosch, Yamaha, Shimano, Ananda or Brose.
Check the visual condition of the motor before buying your second-hand E-Bike. Look to see if it has suffered any knocks or if it has ever been opened. Look for scratches on the screws, for example, which could indicate that they have already been dismantled.
You can go on an adventure without breaking the bank by buying a second-hand electric bike.
Testing is the key!
Another tip for buying an electric bike...
Before buying your second-hand electric bike, we strongly recommend that you test it for about 15 minutes, over a distance of 1 to 5 km. By trying it out, you can check not only its condition but also whether it's right for you!
- The suspension: step off a kerb or brake hard to check its effectiveness.
- The engine: when driving, the engine should be smooth and quiet. It should not overheat.
- Brakes: when braking, they should not squeak, let alone vibrate.
- The battery: check that it holds up well under hard acceleration.
- The used electric bike as a whole: explore different types of terrain to discover the bike's strengths and limitations, and above all, decide whether the main use you'll be putting it to matches its characteristics.
3 questions to ask the seller before buying your second-hand electric bike
1 - How many kilometres have it travelled? The mileage displayed on the electric bike will help you determine its level of use and the potential wear and tear on the battery, taking into account the age of the bike.
2 - Has it undergone any recent repairs? Ask the seller to provide you with invoices for repairs carried out on the electric bike. This will enable you to assess the level of maintenance carried out by the seller and to plan for any repairs that may need to be carried out after purchase.
3 - Why is he selling it? Don't hesitate to ask the seller about the reasons for the sale. This will give you a better understanding of the seller's motivation, and you may be able to negotiate a price that reflects the seller's circumstances or the urgency of selling the bike.
You now have all the information you need to find the electric bike that will take you wherever you go. Enjoy your ride!
