Electric bikes and rain: do they mix?

You've made an electric bike your preferred means of transport... but in everyday life, you can't choose the weather! Whether you're braving the showers on your way to work or the mud and puddles on the trails, this article tells you what you need to do to enjoy your electric bike in the rain, without forgetting to protect your bike battery!

Can you ride an electric bike in the rain?

Electric bike battery in the rain: what are the dangers? Can I leave my electric bike in the rain? How do I ride my bike in the rain?

These questions often give rise to concern. Electric bikes are fitted with electrical components that are sensitive to moisture. But rest assured, they are water-resistant and designed to withstand the elements without flinching. So there's no need to stay indoors as soon as the drops start to fall ;)

Whether the battery is located on the luggage rack, on the frame or integrated into it, it is always encased in a waterproof case, designed to minimise any water infiltration that could damage it.

Electric bikes and rain are compatible, as long as the safety recommendations are followed!

5 precautions to take when riding an electric bike in the rain

When you choose to ride an electric bike in the rain, it's important to take a few precautions to ensure your safety and the preservation of your electric bike.

#1. Avoid submerging your electric bike

It's essential not to submerge your electric bike completely in the rain. While the idea of riding through a puddle of water at high speed is not so dangerous for the bike, it can still present a risk of a fall for the rider. When it comes to protecting components, we simply recommend that you don't immerse your entire bike in water, for example to clean it.

Can I leave my electric bike in the rain?

No. Too much water could damage the motor or battery. Submerging your electric bike completely or for a long time in the rain could damage the waterproof protection and allow water to penetrate, which could short-circuit the battery and render it unusable. We therefore recommend that you remove the battery and place it under cover if you plan to leave your EAB exposed to heavy rain for several hours.

#2. Check the condition of your bike

Yes, a bike in poor condition is less resistant to rain!

To use your electric bike in the rain, make sure the battery is correctly attached and protected by a protective cover, wherever it is on the bike.

Before riding in the rain, also check the condition of your tyres and make sure they are properly inflated. Opt for a slightly reduced tyre pressure for better grip, especially in wet weather.

Can I leave my electric bike in the rain? If it's in good condition, the answer is yes!

#3. Brake gently

Wet roads are notoriously slippery, so if you're using your electric bike in the rain, brake gently, anticipating your stops as much as possible. Avoid sudden braking, as this could cause your bike to skid. If your bike is fitted with hydraulic disc brakes, use them for gradual braking. When riding your E-Bike in the rain, don't use the rear brake alone, as this could cause the rear wheel to lock up and skid.

#4. Choose your itinerary carefully

Riding an e-bike in the rain: avoid slippery surfaces such as tram tracks, pedestrian crossings, manhole covers and white lines, as they are particularly dangerous in wet weather. Ride in a straight line wherever possible and avoid sharp or abrupt bends to reduce the risk of skidding.

#5. Electric bikes and rain: a question of anticipation!

When riding an electric bike in a thunderstorm, be vigilant and anticipate obstacles, even if they seem a long way off. Be aware of puddles, piles of fallen leaves and pedestrian crossings to avoid sudden stops. Also, reduce your speed when it's raining to help you anticipate unpredictable situations.

By following these 5 tips, you'll be able to ride your electric bike safely in the rain. Bear in mind that caution is the order of the day in wet weather, and adapt your riding accordingly for a pleasant, trouble-free experience!
