It is generally recommended to recharge an e-bike battery when it reaches around 20–30 % remaining charge. Going below this threshold repeatedly can accelerate cell wear. Lithium-ion batteries prefer partial cycles rather than full discharges.
This also reduces chemical stress inside the battery and increases the total number of possible charge cycles over its lifespan. In practice, there’s no need to wait until the battery is nearly empty to plug it in.
Avoid deep discharging your battery! Deep discharge refers to using the battery down to an extremely low level, usually close to 0%. At this stage, the internal cells are heavily stressed, accelerating chemical degradation. If a battery stays too long in this state, its protection system may trigger to prevent irreversible damage. In the worst cases, the battery can permanently lose its ability to recharge and become unusable.
It is therefore recommended to:
Not ride until the bike completely shuts off
Never store a fully discharged battery
Recharge quickly if it has dropped very low
For long-term storage, a charge around 40–60 % is recommended. Check our guide on how to recharge your e-bike battery.
