When to recharge your electric bike battery?

Knowing when to recharge your electric bike battery is essential to maintain its performance, extend its lifespan, and avoid unexpected breakdowns. Here are the best practices to follow.

Key points :

  • Recharge your battery when it reaches 20–30 %
  • Avoid deep discharges and don’t fear partial charges
  • Adjust charging frequency according to your usage

Charge your battery when it reaches 20–30 %

It is generally recommended to recharge an e-bike battery when it reaches around 20–30 % remaining charge. Going below this threshold repeatedly can accelerate cell wear. Lithium-ion batteries prefer partial cycles rather than full discharges.

This also reduces chemical stress inside the battery and increases the total number of possible charge cycles over its lifespan. In practice, there’s no need to wait until the battery is nearly empty to plug it in.

Avoid deep discharging your battery! Deep discharge refers to using the battery down to an extremely low level, usually close to 0%. At this stage, the internal cells are heavily stressed, accelerating chemical degradation. If a battery stays too long in this state, its protection system may trigger to prevent irreversible damage. In the worst cases, the battery can permanently lose its ability to recharge and become unusable.

It is therefore recommended to:

  • Not ride until the bike completely shuts off

  • Never store a fully discharged battery

  • Recharge quickly if it has dropped very low

For long-term storage, a charge around 40–60 % is recommended. Check our guide on how to recharge your e-bike battery.

Doctibike's expert advice

Doris - Customer & Product Service Coordinator at Doctibike

"Use the manufacturer’s original charger or a compatible one to ensure stable charging and avoid overvoltage or micro-errors, which can lead to thermal runaway and battery damage.

Batteries are generally delivered with a partial charge, such as Bosch e-bike batteries. We recommend charging your battery to 100 % before first use.”

Memory effect: a myth for modern batteries

Unlike older nickel batteries, lithium-ion batteries do not suffer from the memory effect. This means they do not need to be fully discharged before recharging. Partial charges are even preferable.

Frequent charging, even after short trips, does not harm the battery; on the contrary, it helps maintain stable voltage and longer overall lifespan.

For daily use or long distances

For intensive use (daily commutes, long distances, professional use), it is recommended to:

  • Recharge the battery after each ride

  • Avoid repeated fast charges if not necessary

  • Charge to 100 % if a long ride is planned. Remember to unplug once fully charged!

A battery used daily should be kept within a comfortable charge range to avoid premature wear. Regular charging also ensures consistent and reliable range.

The importance of temperature

Temperature plays a crucial role in when and how to charge a battery. It is not recommended to charge:

  • A very cold battery (below 0 °C)

  • A too-hot battery after heavy use

Ideally, charge at room temperature, between 10 and 25 °C. After rides in very cold or hot weather, let the battery return to a stable temperature before plugging it in.
