Top 6: Why recondition your electric bike battery?

Soudure d'une batterie de vélo électrique pour son reconditionnement

Over the years, your electric bike may become less efficient or lose its range until it's completely out of action. To avoid reaching this point of no return, there are several options open to you: choose a new electrically-assisted bicycle, buy a new battery or... have it reconditioned.

Reconditioning your own bike battery is an alternative that will require very good electrical skills, and the slightest mistake could prove fatal for your battery and your equipment, your garage or your home! That's why we recommend that you go to an expert to avoid any short-circuits. If you're still not convinced: here are our top 6 reasons why you should opt to recondition your battery pack!

1. A more attractive price than buying a new electric bicycle battery

A reconditioned bicycle battery costs up to 50% less than a new one. If you're tired of having to buy a new battery every 2 years, or are considering buying an expensive new electric bike, reconditioning is a good compromise!

When we repair a battery for an electric bike, we replace the batteries in your battery with new ones from a good manufacturer (Samsung, LG or Panasonic). Unlike a new battery pack, you don't have to pay for all the components, as some are recycled and others can be reused, such as the casing or connectors. This means you get the same features as a new battery at an affordable price.

You can even choose to increase the battery's autonomy and capacity! The price of this service will vary according to the capacity required.

2. Increased range

By reconditioning your bike battery, you can improve both the capacity and the range of your electric bike! With a longer range, you'll be able to go further, particularly on the Jura escapade, recharging your battery less often (see article Top 5 of the most beautiful places in France for electric mountain biking).

To get a higher capacity, you'll need to opt for a reconditioned original battery with a higher amperage than the one you have. Choosing a battery with a higher amperage than the original will not damage your battery and is even recommended to improve its durability!

3. Better quality cells

Whatever amperage you choose, the cells in your battery pack will be recycled and replaced by new ones. The quality of the new batteries is a factor on which performance and durability will very much depend. That's why we advise you to :

  • Have your reconditioning carried out by an expert: you'll have access to better quality components that can improve the durability of your equipment.
  • Check the brand of components to be used: Samsung, Panasonic and LG cells are reliable references. Some companies may also offer lesser-known brands that prove to be unreliable after a few months' use.
  • Check the chemistry of the cells to be used: more specific and complex, we invite you to read All you need to know about lithium batteries to find out more about the superior stability of manganese cells compared with polymer cells.

With poor quality cells, your battery pack could start to lose its autonomy after 2 months and become unusable after 1 year. It would be a shame to waste the potential of your battery, which could last up to 7 years with the right maintenance and components!

4. Reuse an old electric bike model

If the model of your electric bike is no longer available in specialist shops or from your manufacturer, reconditioning will be a tailor-made solution to your problem. When the model of your bike is too old, your specialist shop will be unable to offer you a replacement solution or a new battery.

Reconditioning your bike battery will therefore be the right solution for your ebike, whatever the age or range of your cycle.

Example: Marie has a Greencity Madrid electrically-assisted bicycle that is starting to wear out after 5 years of use. She asked about replacing her current battery, but the cycle was discontinued in 2012. Instead of having to replace her Greencitybike with a more expensive model, she has the option of having her Greencity battery reconditioned and all her equipment refurbished.

Marie will be able to keep her trusty Greencitybike for as long as she likes, because a good bike is a bike that lasts!

5. Ecological battery repair for electric bikes

In addition to all the other benefits, you're doing something for the planet. Your used electronic components are recycled, making it possible to manufacture new components and even new batteries. With this process, almost 40% of materials will soon be reusable in a battery: a big step forward!

In this way, restoring bicycle batteries allows you to keep a sustainable transport solution, as an alternative to the car.

6. Extend the warranty to 2 years

With proper maintenance, you can keep your bike for up to 6 years. During this period, a number of problems can arise.

The majority of problems relate to the battery, wear components (cables, harnesses) and crankset motors.

However, Doctibike offers a tailor-made solution for every faulty part: purchase of new components, battery reconditioning or engine reconditioning.

You can also contact your cycle dealers for personalised advice or to have your battery diagnosed by our tester in their shops.

As well as benefiting from a long-lasting solution, you'll extend the warranty on your parts by a further 2 years!
